Did you ever want to „draw“ polygons inverted (masked) with a border with a color gradient ? With QGIS (tested with 2.8) it’s a small step…

Just define in the layer’s style „Inverted polygon“ and afterwards set „Symbol layer type“ to shapeburst-fill with the option „shade to a distance“. Voila 🙂
